| About SVG |
|
SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphics. It is an XML language for sophisticated two-dimensional graphics. SVG is similar in scope to Macromedia's proprietary Flash technology, among other things it offers anti-aliased rendering, pattern and gradient fills, sophisticated filter-effects, clipping to arbitrary paths, text and animations. What distinguishes SVG from Flash is that it is a W3 recommendation (i.e. a standard for all intents and purposes) and that it is XML-based as opposed to a closed binary format. It is explicitly designed to work with other W3C standards such as CSS, DOM and SMIL. |

Recommended Browser and Operating System: 1) Windows 2000/XP 2) Microsoft Explorer 6.0, Mozilla, FireFox, Opera Mac users: You will need to download and install the viewer manually. HiMAP has been tested on both Mac Internet Explorer 5.5 and Safari. The Safari browser has some problems viewing the SVGs. For example, in order to display the SVG after it is loaded, you need to resize the window manually. This bug is on the Apple/Safari end and thus cannot be resolved at the current time. Linux users: Viewing HiMAP on a linux platform is not recommended as Adobe has yet to release for a suitable version for linux browsers. We have had limited success with Opera on Suse. If you have trouble viewing SVGs with the browsers mentioned above, you will need to download the plug-in manually from Adobe. Click here to download the plug-in. Close all the windows in your browser. Download and install the viewer. |
